Overview of the Department

Established by order of the Tashkent State University of Economics (TSUE) on May 3, 1993, following an Academic Council decision on April 9, 1993, the Department has undergone several name changes reflecting the evolution of the discipline: International Economic Development (1993), World Economy and International Economic Relations (1998), International Economics (2010), and World Economy (2017). In 2024, as part of TSUE’s institutional reorganization, the Department reinstated its original title: World Economy and International Economic Relations.

Academic Profile and Programs

The Department delivers undergraduate and graduate curricula focused on international trade, economic diplomacy, integration processes, and global development. Programs combine rigorous theory with applied coursework, case analysis, and policy-oriented projects to prepare graduates for roles in the public sector, international organizations, and globally engaged firms.

Since 1993, about 1,500 students have completed programs run by the Department. Many alumni work in public administration, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in internationally focused economic sectors, highlighting the Department’s role in developing the country’s human capital.

Faculty and Scholarly Capacity

The department has 17 full-time faculty members, including Doctors of Science (DSc) and PhDs, as well as senior teachers and lecturers. The department is led by Professor Nilufar Ismailova, the current department chair. Faculty members engage in active research projects while teaching, ensuring that course content remains current with debates in the global economy, trade policy, and international economic relations.

Research Priorities and Impact

Departmental research supports national strategic priorities, such as export diversification, WTO membership, and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). Faculty share their findings through peer-reviewed publications, policy briefs, and expert consultations, thus helping shape evidence-based economic policies and boost international collaboration.

Curriculum Development and Collaboration

The Department regularly reviews and updates curricula to align with international standards and labor-market needs. Its syllabi and course structures have become reference models for peer institutions in Uzbekistan. Collaboration with government agencies, industry partners, and international academic networks supports internships, guest lectures, and joint research efforts that improve student learning and employability.
